Tribal Groups


26. Ashanti - Guinea Coast, Ghana.  Instruments include: Kpanlogo drum (Asafo), Kyinsin drum. The Atumpan, talking drums played with two bent sticks, usually the master drums of an Adoa drum ensemble.

27. Fanti - Guinea Coast.  Istruments include Dongo, Blekete, and the Fanti Osode.

28. Dahomeans - Guinea Coast, Benin.  Used instruments: Bafoko, a calabash drum with goatskin, Bai clappers, and a large bass drum called an agboba.

29. Ewe - Guinea Coast, Ghana. Musical leadership from Female (vudadawo) and Male (vumegawo) community members.  Performance hierarchy of composer (besino), lead drummer (azaguno), and supporting song leaders (haxiawo).  Instruments include a beaded gourd shaker called a Axatse.

30. Ga - Guinea Coast, Ghana.  Instruments: Talking drums and clapperless bells.  Females learn music from Matrikinswomen, and males learn from Patrikinsmen.

31. Yoruba - Saharan zone, Southwestern Nigeria.  Instruments include: Bata drum (Kekeli), shakers called Agbe or Agüe.  Yoruba peoples also use a drum called an Ashiko made  with strips of wood placed next to each other and skinned with goat, antelope, or rarely cow skin.

32. Bini - Guinea Coast, Benin.  Instruments include: The Aso, a wooden xylophone, also called a Doso. 

33. Ibo - Guinea Coast, Nigeria.  Instruments include: Ekwe, a two tone  log drum, played with either a plain wooden stick, or a rubber-tipped beater.

34. Mende - Guinea Coast, Sierre Leone.

35. Yako - Guinea Coast, Nigeria.

36. Gbari - Guinea Coast, Nigeria.  Instruments include: Dundun, a type of talking drum.

4. Tuareg- Western Niger, Nigeria. The Sahara. They are related to the
berbers, and can be fond throughout northern and west Africa also.

6.Kanuri- Bornu Province in Northeastern Nigeria.
7. Baggara- Sudan and Chad
8.Senegalese- Senegal
9. Bambara- a large group of people (4 million) found in mostly Mali, but
also in Northern Cote D'iviore, Guinea, Senegal and the Gambia.
10. Dogon- Southeastern Mali and Burkina Faso
11. Malinke/ Mandingo-Mostly from Mali, but found throughout west Africa.
12. Songhai- Central Mali
